Starkly contrasting the typical appearance of lingerie models in the media today, photographer Yumna Al-Arashi collaborated with Lonely Lingerie to register the beauty in realism.
Lonely Lingerie consistently present a faithful depiction of women in their imagery due to the frustration that ‘modern portrayals of women have never been more unrealistic’. By harking back to a time when Art appreciated the natural appearance of a woman’s body, the brand has shown that women today can be celebrated in the same manner as glorified marble statues. In choosing a photographer to capture their passionate idea, the New York-based photographer with a background in politics who is known for tackling delicate topics of sexuality and religion proved a fine choice.
“When a woman is carved out of marble, her beauty is awe-inspiring. It’s as if the rocks have waited dormant in the mountains for millennia for the right human hand to carve feminine curves into it. The relationship between women and marble is breathtaking. It is holy” Photographer @yumnaaa for Lonely ♡
As a creative, Yumna Al-Arashi produces work that disturbs the stereotypical notions of women today. In her series “Northern Yemen” she presents hijab-draped women standing as all-powerful goddesses against backdrops of vast landscapes. The series was created to show the narrow-minded depiction of Muslim women in the media by presenting an alternative view.
On the matter, Al-Arashi commented: “My whole life I’ve been surrounded by Muslim women who cover themselves, and they’re such badasses and have such incredible depth—as much as any of the uncovered women I’ve met. As a Muslim woman, you’re often boxed into a single identity. I wanted to shift that stereotype.”
