Eco-Friendly Summer Essentials

With summer holiday countdowns coming to an end and the stress of packing kicking in, we’ve found the eco-friendly essentials you will need this summer to make your holiday that little bit more caring towards the environment.

Suncream

As we swim in the sea, the suncream we wear ends up effecting the ocean , in fact, an estimated 6,000 to 14,000 tonnes of sun cream end up in the ocean each year. Sadly, 25% of the ingredients in sunscreen are known to cause damage to ecosystems.

Green People are providing the happy blend between protecting yourself from the sun and being environmentally friendly. The organic brand is working with the Marine Conservation Society (MCS)  to help solve the effects of sun cream on the oceans and coral reefs. 30p from each sale of their products goes towards the Marine Conservation Society, and, they ensure that this product protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Toothbrush

In America alone 1 million toothbrushes are thrown away a year; each person will throw away on average 8 pounds of plastic toothbrushes in a lifetime. Whilst they may have a longer life and use than a plastic straw, the plastic ends up in landfills and the ocean nonetheless. Thankfully, the affordable and easy solution is to swap your plastic toothbrush out for a bamboo one.

Georganics is a UK brand that sell eco toothbrushes made from 100% biodegradable bamboo with charcoal infused bristles. Each toothbrush also comes in a paper box that is biodegradable and compostable. At £3.90 they are a worthy investment that the environment will thank you for.

Water Bottle

It’s harder to recycle plastic bottles than you think, in fact, most are not recycled as only certain types of plastic bottles can be recycled by certain municipalities. As a result, they end up lying stagnant in landfills placing dangerous chemicals into the ground. Moreover, if you fill a plastic bottle with water so that it is a quarter of the way full, that is how much oil it took to make that one bottle in your hand.

An amazingly stylish yet conscious alternative to using plastic bottles on your holiday this summer is by Stay SixtyThe London-based brand has created the ideal on-the-go bottle that is easy to carry, whilst minimal in aesthetic so that it will never run out of style. Better yet, Stay Sixty are using their incredible appearance to make drinking from a eco-friendly bottle fashionable – if you use one this summer, it’s a guarantee that people will ask you where they can get their hands on one.

Of the 260 million tons of plastic made each year, roughly 10% end up in the ocean. With the harm to animals created by ocean waste at an all time high, summer holidays spent relaxing in the ocean are now tainted with the knowledge of what is really happening beneath the beautiful surface.

But, imagine if you could swim in the sea this summer wearing a bikini that you know has helped clean the very sea you’re in. Los Angeles based swimwear brand Galamaar are providing this positivity. The swimwear produced by the brand is made of recycled ocean waste, and, their size range plus design variations mean that there is something for everyone.

With these essential pieces for your holiday,  it’s clear to see that going zero-waste this summer isn’t a difficult move to make. Attempting to be as eco-friendly as you can be in a short space of time shows that it’s in the small steps forward where positive change takes place; maybe the next step can be an entire summer of eco friendliness, and, after that, forever?
